Red Knot Calidris canutus
A very scarce breeding species. Most often seen on spring and autumn migration, when they forage in small flocks in the tidal zone (often in the broad river deltas). Occurs most commonly on west Spitsbergen and on Bjørnøya. Svalbard is the only place in the Western Palearctic where the species breeds.
Features: 23-26 cm. A medium-sized wader. Juvenile birds resemble adults in winter plumage. Breeding: Is found breeding only in a handful of localities on Spitsbergen. The breeding population is probably more than thirty pairs. |
